A client of ours left me a voicemail last week. I missed it. Like most of you, I receive several spam calls a day and never check my voicemail – and because of this, I missed a client calling with a need. Luckily, I looked at my messages Saturday while waiting for our pool service and saw it. It had been a few days, and I couldn’t respond on Saturday. I was embarrassed but thankfully on Monday, he understood.

Voicemails can be powerful tools in today’s buying environment. Instead of going wasting time on email and text, leaving a customer a lengthy voicemail with an authentic tone can clarify a situation and provide context … if they listen to it.

Here’s the secret, and what makes this a popular technique: Follow the voicemail with an email stating: “I just left an obnoxiously long voicemail, and I think it’ll explain everything – I don’t want to keep filling up your inbox. Listen to it when you can and let me know your thoughts.” You’ve saved them from millions of emails, they got to hear the tone of your voice … and they listened to it because you told them about it!
