After you return from two or three days of fun and PowerPoint overload, will you have anything more than a hangover and some cool pictures?  Sales team meetings can be some of the most beneficial gatherings of the year.  Unfortunately, many times this opportunity is wasted under the guise of “bonding” and “team work”.  You should have fun and cut loose a little bit with other people on your team that you see once a year, but don’t lose sight of the effort that your company has put into this meeting.  If you want to get the most out of your sales meeting, take these two simple steps…

  1. Set a goal of coming home with three new ideas that you can implement by the end of January.  Use the notes app on your smart phone to store the ideas.  Within the first 20 minutes of the opening presentation, you’ll probably write down four or five ideas … that’s ok.  At the end of the event and before you get home, narrow it down to the top three ideas with the most important filter being “able to implement by the end of January”.
  1. Before you leave for your meeting, block off one hour on your calendar following your return to develop plans on using the three ideas.  What resources do you need?  How/where/when will you get the resources?  When will you use the idea?  (BTW, now is always a good time.)

If you take these two simple steps, I promise you’ll kick off the year better than ever.
