Have you seen what pro golfer Jason Day is doing on the golf course lately? He’s won five tournaments this year, including his first Major victory at the PGA Championship. He just won the BMW Championship this past weekend, including a first round where he could’ve scored a 59 with a chip in on his 18th hole. The guy is on fire!
However, the factor that sticks out to me is his visualization exercises that he performs before his shots. If you’ve watched him, I’m sure you’ve noticed him closing his eyes during his pre-shot routine. He is actually visualizing the perfect shot… and this is why I think he snuck into one of my sessions or webinars in the last couple of years.
One of the exercises I put my clients through in my sales training courses is role playing… and I do it a lot. I know how painful and unpopular role playing is (in fact, I estimate that I just lost about 40% of you and may never get your business). However, if done correctly, it’s the very best exercise to prepare you to naturally run your sales calls with the strategies that might seem unnatural to you at first. Regardless of what we’re teaching - cold calling, taking incoming calls, asking outcome questions, disarming with authority, etc. – I use role playing to prepare my clients for the real world.
So, what does role playing have to do with visualization? I take it a step further. I teach my clients to role play by themselves for five minutes before every meeting, and visualize the outcome they desire. It sounds crazy, hokey, and a little “out there”; but it works if done correctly.
