Idea Tuesday:  How to become the perceived expert in every association you join.

On Monday, we discussed the difference between networking and socializing.  Today, let’s discuss an idea that will maximize your networking efforts.

While networking, we’d all love to become that go-to expert.  You know who I mean - whenever there is a discussion about a security need, your name is brought up and followed with: “you’ve got to call ….”  That’s our ultimate goal in networking – having our network working for us when we’re not there.  There is one method to increasing the probability of getting there.  One thing you can do that will grow the perception of your expertise immediately.  One thing you have to do …

Idea for this Tuesday:  Speak.  Yep, it’s that simple: volunteer to speak on a topic that will educate your associations and networking groups.  When you position yourself behind a lectern and teach your audience, your perceived expertise raises dramatically.  As long as your audience is curious about the topic, you’ll be considered the subject matter expert moving forward and your name will be mentioned in many circles.  For example, discussing the pros and cons of hosted services may not be valuable to an IT association where everyone already knows about the topic.  However, it would be an excellent topic at a Rotary meeting full of managers and executives who are curious about their data being hosted on someone else’s server.

Do it.  If you don’t feel comfortable speaking, then do something about it now.  Seriously … now.  Join a Toastmasters club near you.  Work with your boss and peers.  If you really want to differentiate yourself and make sure your network is working for you, then you have to speak publicly and educate your marketplace.
