Just smile.

smile

When I was in college, I started attending leadership seminars and reading self-help books on the basics of living a full life.  I remember being stimulated by ideas that seem so fundamental today; but unlike today, I actually used these ideas when I was younger.  As I’ve moved through life I’ve lost sight of how powerful the basics of life can be, and I don’t practice them as much as I should.  One practice that will blow none of your minds is the influence of a sincere smile.

Well, two weeks ago I decided to use the smile again.  I was waiting to get my rental car in Los Angeles and the line was creeping along.  I know, I know – all lines seem slow.  Trust me … this one was slow.  What made it worse was the fact that the air conditioning was broken and it was a strangely hot day in Southern California.  Everyone was complaining and the people working the desk weren’t the brightest or most motivated.

When I approached the desk, I smiled and greeted my attendant with a ton of appreciation.  I asked her how long they’ve been without AC and commented on their uniform shirts looking warm.  She laughed a little and then I said: “I really hope they make this comfortable for you guys soon.  It’s no big deal to me – I get to leave in a few minutes.”  She then smiled again and gave me an upgrade.  Win – win.

I admit that I don’t make smiling a habit.  Unfortunately, I hate incompetence and don’t mind confrontation – not the best combination for leading a happy life.  However, this experience at the rental car counter motivated me to continue sharing my smile the rest of the day.  Guess what?  It was an awesome day because of it.

So, your assignment is to forget how much smarter you are than all those dummies around you and simply smile.  You’ll be shocked how your life will improve.
