Yeah, I just exploited Donald Trump and politics to promote my blog. I feel a little dirty. However, I think there is a great lesson in his success so far…
The primary races are illustrating more than America’s fondness for Donald Trump. I believe it’s making it crystal clear that we’re unhappy with traditional politics. Although they’ve fallen over the past few months, look at all the other non-traditional candidates that had some mild success. Voters aren’t necessarily screaming “we love Trump” as much as they are “we’re tired of the rest of you”. It’s actually pretty cool to watch the folks in D.C. scramble. Their seat might be next – who knows?
So, what can a sales professional learn from these races?
Your customers are probably just as tired of the typical sales person as America is the typical politician. What if you approached your meetings a little different? What if you left the PowerPoint in the office and just had a conversation? What if you broke some of the golden rules like not letting customers play with your demo? What if you tried to teach your customer something instead of asking manipulative questions to eventually sell them something? What if you listened?
I could go on forever. Try something different. Your customers are tired of the same old stuff. Be different, be better, and go have a SuperWednesday, or Thursday, or … (Ok, I know that was corny – I owe you one.)
