Today is my birthday… and I think I learned a valuable life lesson.

 reflection

Today is my birthday.  I’m writing my blog posts for the next couple of weeks and thought it would be easy.  After all, milestones like birthdays always bring some cool revelations to share, right?  Well, not really.  In fact, I’m sort of stuck.  Don’t get me wrong… I’ve had an awesome weekend.  My wife planned an amazing two days with a few close friends and their wives and kids.  Great weekend that I’ll remember for years.  However, I don’t have anything profound to report.  Let’s see…

I woke up on Saturday morning and took care of my typical errands before we left for the Ritz resort.  (One of the benefits of living in Orlando is the access we have to some of the finest resorts in the world and the crazy specials they have for locals every now and then.)  After spending a couple hours at the pool with our families, my friend Cliff and I played 18 holes in the afternoon.  We capped the day off with an incredible dinner at Norman’s while our babysitter watched all the kids.  My childhood friend Andy and his wife joined us for dinner.

I don’t remember reflecting on life and the changes I’d like to make.  I didn’t make any tear-provoking speeches.  I could probably lose 10 pounds and I’d like to spend more time with my daughter, but who doesn’t?  Actually, I don’t even really care about the 10 pounds – after spending the day at the resort pool yesterday I feel pretty good about myself!

Wait a minute… that might be the revelation.  Birthdays and anniversaries and other major dates in one’s life don’t have to serve as times of reflection.  They can, and you should take the opportunity to do so if needed.  However, if you make the small, hard decisions the other 360 days of the year you can use New Year’s Day to have fun and watch a lot of football instead of writing out your resolutions.  I’m not sure if I’m on to anything or not.  I just know that I had a good time this birthday, and I think that’s something that doesn’t need reflection or meditation.
