Like most ideas, sales people will get excited about their social media initiative for a few days, but then those pesky customers callJ. Seriously, we’re so slammed with immediate, and sometimes urgent, requests that it’s very tough to build a strategic long-term strategy for anything – including social media work. Which leads us nicely to this Tuesday’s idea:
Idea for this Tuesday: Every day at a specific time, invest 10-15 minutes to work your social media networks. Every single work day (I’ll even do some Twitter work on the weekends every now and then). Some days you won’t be able to do it at the designated time, but that’s ok – as long as you do it. Below are some thoughts about this idea.
- First thing, scroll through your network and see what’s happened since yesterday. If you’re on a blog or discussion group, check out the new comments or discussions.
- When you see something that catches your eye, read deeper. If it’s an article or anything that’ll take more than 60 seconds to read, stick it in Pocket. (If you don’t have the Pocket app, get it.)
- Like and share pieces as you feel it’s appropriate.
- Comment where you have questions or opinions.
- Make sure you have the most updated version of your network or blog app on your mobile device. If you restrict this habit to your computer, you’ll never do it.
That’s it. Simple, but so hard. Follow the concepts that I’ll present on Wednesday and Friday, and you’ll soon be building a presence of a competent, curious and helpful sales professional with whom others will want to work.
