Idea Tuesday:  When planning your schedule for the week, listen to your body.

Sales people have to call on several different skill sets throughout the week: creativity to solve problems, rapid task execution when knocking out necessary paperwork, personal engagement when meeting with customers, and about another half dozen or so that pop up throughout the week.  This is especially true for security integrators that have to solve technical problems, develop proposals, grow relationships, and stay on top of their pipeline report – in the same day.  How can we optimize our time and take advantage of the way our brains and bodies naturally work?

Consider the times of the day and the week when your creative mind is humming.  Ideas are arising out of the air constantly.  For me, this happens in the early morning.  Also, note the time when your energy level might be a little low but you can handle the mundane tasks that have to be completed.  For me, this is late afternoon.  My personal engagement time is any time between 7:00 am and about noon, and then again in mid-afternoon after my 11 minute nap (yes, I take an 11 minute nap every day – see post from a few weeks ago).

Idea Tuesday:  Once you know these times, plan your days around these natural cycles.  Randomly doing tasks is like randomly putting nine players on the baseball field regardless of their natural position.  Writing this post at 5:10 am takes me about 15 minutes.  If I started this at 4:00 pm, it would take me all night.  Take advantage of your creative and personal engagement cycles, and you’ll save a ton of time and enjoy your days much, much more.
