Should I expense this?

I thought this would be a great post for a Friday.

Sales people usually have an expense account in which they have some freedom to spend their company’s or their client’s money. A few times a year, there is that borderline expense and the question: should I expense this?

In general, my answer is usually no. Don’t nickel and dime your company or your client. I’ve noticed that those who worry about these nickels and dimes end up with just that – nickels and dimes. Invest in your business, but get approval ahead of time for questionable items and if you have to eat $37 for a seat upgrade, eat it.

This advice has nothing to do with your clients or your company – it has everything to do with you and your frame of mind. Great sales people have an attitude of abundance. You’ll probably never get called out on those questionable expenses, but you’ll be sacrificing your attitude of abundance for a few hundred dollars a year, at the most. If you want to be great, eat those nickels and dimes.
