Producing quality content that positions you as a trusted expert should be your top priority according to Google. Here on the Vector Firm blog, we’ve spent a lot of time talking about the importance of quality content and earning trusted expert status. But, how does content rank against the other criteria Google considers? Last week Google published an article on Webmaster Central and here’s what they have to say about content, changes to their algorithm and SEO…

How Often Does Google Change their Algorithm?

Google is continually changing the criteria and algorithm for search ranking. According to a recent article in Search Engine Land, Google changed their algorithm 3,200 times in the past year. While most updates are minor, they do release “core updates” a handful of time each year. Changes are meant to produce the best search results possible.

What does Google Suggest are Keys to Ranking and Good SEO?

In the Google Webmaster Central article they provide several examples about what your content should focus on to maximize your rankings including quality, level of expertise, overall presentation, and how it compares with what others are producing. Two key takeaways for your content marketing plans:

#1 Content should answer specific questions

If you want to achieve higher rankings, you’ll absolutely need to produce question and answer content on a regular basis. And you’ll need more than one page to rank well. Ideally, you have dozens or hundreds of pages that answer specific questions. High numbers ensure that your pages show up at the top of the list when prospects are fishing around for answers.

#2 Content should be original, factual and relevant

Be sure the content is original and answers the challenge with unique strategies. To make sure you’re doing this, try reading the title and content from the perspective of your target customer, not your own. Consider asking someone else to read the content. Have them tell you if the content is interesting and actually answers the question or solves the proposed problem.

With original, factual, and specific content, Google will rank your website and blog as a trusted source for answers.
