How should you greet a customer on a religious holiday?

Today is Good Friday.  From what I can tell, most companies are working and you’ll likely be treating today with the same level of sales activity that you usually do on Fridays.  However, you might have many moments of discomfort throughout the day wondering whether you should acknowledge Good Friday and Easter.  Below is a good set of guidelines to follow:

  • If you know your contact celebrates Easter, depart the meeting or call with a friendly greeting about the holiday.  Simply say: “Have a great Easter Weekend.”
  • If the company is acknowledging Easter, but you’re not sure if the person does (i.e. you’re calling on someone that might not be Christian at a corporate Chick Fil A office), then I suggest not saying anything.
  • If you don’t know, but you have a good relationship with the person, you can simply say “have a nice holiday weekend”.

I know that some of you are getting ill reading all of my political correctness.  However, I think its common courtesy to acknowledge that some people don’t celebrate certain holidays.  Getting back to the mission of this blog … if you show this level of awareness and respect, you’ll win a lot more business!

Take care, and if you celebrate, Happy Easter!  If you don’t, Happy Weekend!
