I thought it would be worthwhile to share three ideas with you about your 2016 goals that you’ve likely not heard before.  Three ideas that are directed at sales professionals.  I started yesterday with Idea #1, and will share #2 and #3 with you today and tomorrow, respectively.  Without further delay, here is Idea #2, an idea that is completely opposite of what you’ve heard a million times…

Keep some of your goals subjective.  Write them down and check on them week or so, but don’t get into the details.  For example, “I’m going to be an amazing father and husband.”  Conventional wisdom tells us to break this into detailed and measurable goals.  I could probably break this into objective goals, but I don’t think that measuring the number of times I drive my daughter to school during the year is going to capture my intention of being an amazing father.  However, I do believe that asking myself every week or so if I’m being an amazing father and husband, and truly thinking about my answer will capture my intention.

Don’t do this for all of your goals.  For example, “I want to win more new customers” should be detailed and objective – how many new customers, how much business, what vertical markets, etc.?   At the same time, don’t feel like every one of your goals needs to be broken down to the finest detail and objective.

Idea #2: Keep some of your goals subjective and immeasurable.
